There has been a lot of press recently regarding Tenancy Renewal Fees. These are the fees that some agents charge to landlords for carrying out renewals to tenancy agreements for little or no work involved.

Recently, Foxtons, a large London based agent was taken to the High Court by the Office of Fair Trading for charging excessive amounts for carrying out renewals to tenancy agreements when there was often no work involved at all.
The OFT went to the High Court to fight what it said were unfair terms in Foxtons contracts.
This case has dragged on for years and in the Court's ruling, the Judge accepted that all the terms that the OFT brought before the court were unfair.

The number of tenants defaulting on rent is likely to soar following another rise in unemployment, a leading figure in the lettings industry has warned.

Unemployment now stands at a 12-year high of 2.26 million, the worst since the end of 1996.

In the three months to April, the jobless total increased by 232,000 with the outlook for younger job-seekers particularly bleak.

John Boyle, managing director of HomeLet, said his firm processes around 30,000 tenant references every month, the majority of which are for applicants aged between 18 and 24.
